We are all Sculptors of our World

Posted on January 14th, 2010

I woke up early today, excited over all I get to do before the clock strikes midnight. I have responsibilities to fulfill today. I am important. My job is to choose what kind of day I am going to have.

Today I can complain because the weather is rainy or I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.

Today I can feel sad that I don’t have more money or I can be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and guide me away from waste.

Today I can grumble about my health or I can rejoice that I am alive.

Today I can lament over all that my parents didn’t give me when I was growing up or I can feel grateful that they allowed me to be born.

Today I can cry because roses have thorns or I can celebrate that thorns have roses.

Today I can mourn my lack of friend or I can excitedly embark upon a quest to discover new relationships.

Today I can whine because I have to go to work or I can shout for joy because I have a job to do.

Today I can complain because I have to go to school or eagerly open my mind and fill it with rich new tidbits of knowledge.

Today I can murmur dejectedly because I have to do housework or I can feel honored because the Lord has provide shelter for my mind, body and soul.

Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping. What today will be like is up to me. I get to choose what kind of day I will have! Have a GREAT DAY……unless you have other plans.

On Sunday, 10 January 2010 Alison and I exhibited the Odyssey Partnership at the Natural Health Fair in Tolworth.

During the event we challenged visitors to see if they could manage one week without making any negative comments. They are allowed to justifiably complain, for example, if they are not receiving a service they have been promised but not to whinge, moan or collude with anyone else’s whinges and moans either.

Everytime they find themselves doing so those visitors who took the challenge have agreed to move their bands from one wrist to another. We are looking forward to hearing from them to see how successful their week has been.

So why not take the challenge yourself? Maybe invite your family, your friends oryour work colleagues to take the challenge with you,

If you do, please let us know how you get on.

This is not a new idea, Will Bowen included the 21 days challenge in his book ‘A Complaint Free World’ and the inspiring Dr David Hamilton refers to this idea in his highly recommended book ‘ How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body’. In it he says:

‘Complaining about things and criticising people has become a way of life for so many of us that we don’t even notice how often we do it. It’s a habit’.

A habit that effects us physically and psychologically as we absorb the stress living in a state of anger and/or anxiety creates. It affects those around us also. Have you ever avoided someone you know because whenever  you meet them they always have a catalogue of woes. Instinctively we know that being around negativity makes us feel low.

The good news is it’s a habit we can break. We have a choice. We can choose to articulate our negative thoughts or we can stop, think and let it go. In so doing we can look after our well-being and that of those around us. Can you imagine a world free from complaining, back biting, gossiping? A world free from negativity.

You may say ‘I can’t change the world’

As Henry Ford would say ‘whether you think you can or you think you can’t …. you are right’

You have the choice …  we all have the capacity to create the world we want to live in.
